Montebello, Los Angeles County
Montebello, Italian for beautiful mountain, was a farming colony known for flowers and vegetables until oil was struck in the hills on its north side in 1917. Within a few years the field was one of the most productive in California, and the town incorporated in 1920. Wells still operate in the Montebello Hills above the residential streets.
